(THE WOODLANDS, TX) — A 61-year-old cyclist from The Woodlands, who is riding in the Race Across America, was within 1,100 miles of the finish line Tuesday morning.

Dennis Johnson was about 230 miles ahead of the next fastest rider in the men’s 60-69 age group.

The Latest News Headlines, Traffic and Weather:

Technically, he’s riding in his own division, since he’s on a recumbent bicycle while the other three riders in his age group are on standard upright bikes.

Race headquarters are now estimating that he will arrive at the finish line late Friday night.

Johnson rolled out from the Oceanside, Calif., pier on his recumbent bicycle one week ago, en route to Annapolis, Md.

This is the 33rd consecutive year that the race is being held. It started in 1982 as the Great American Bike Race, in which four riders raced from the Santa Monica Pier to the Empire State Building.

The race has grown to 48 solo racers and 51 relay teams of between two and eight riders.

The course is 3,000 miles long, and racers are facing over 170,000 vertical feet of climbing while spending upwards of 23 hours a day on their bikes, allowing for perhaps 45 minutes of sleep a night.

Solo racers will need to cover at least 250 miles every day in order to finish within the 12-day time frame. Women and men ages 60 and older, which includes Johnson, get an extra 21 hours to complete the course.
