Houston’s own Waltrip High School’s award-winning marching band, fondly known as the Roarin’ Red Ram Band, is going to Washington! Or at least they hope to. The 170 students, both past and present members, are seeking donations and sponsors for the trip that has an estimated cost of $137,000.
In March, the Ram Band received the distinct honor of being the sole high school band chosen to represent the state of Texas for this year’s National Independence Day Parade in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C on Sat., July 4. The band received the invitation based on a recommendation provided by Governor Greg Abbott. Since then, Sen. John Whitmire has also given his recognition of the school’s band.
Gabriella Fuentes, who is the band’s head drum major, is especially excited about the invitation. “…this is my band and being the head drum major, I’m gonna lead them the way and make sure we do things to represent the school, community, and the state of Texas.”
Aside from their participation in the parade, the students will also be able to visit the office of Cong. Shelia Jackson Lee, attend the Capitol Fourth Celebration on the Capitol Lawn, and perform at one of the local national monuments.
