Activist and educator, Bree Newsome of Charlotte, N.C. became a hero over the weekend after climbing the flagpole at the State Capital in Columbia, S.C. and removing its Confederate flag. The highly debated symbolism of the flag has been a major topic of discussion since the massacre at historic Emmanuel A.M.E. church in Charleston, S.C. Ms. Though Ms. Newsome was arrested, many see her actions as an act of bravery that is being praised and celebrated on social media with the hashtag #FreeBree.
According to The Washington Post, Ms. Newsome released this statement:
“We removed the flag today because we can’t wait any longer. We can’t continue like this another day. It’s time for a new chapter where we are sincere about dismantling white supremacy and building toward true racial justice and equality.”
