President Obama’s singing of “Amazing Grace” during his eulogy for Reverend Clementa Pinckney, one of the nine people killed in the Charleston church massacre last month, was the most stirring part of his remarks that day.

But the New York Times reported yesterday (July 7th) that First Lady Michelle Obama didn’t think he should sing it. The Times cited an account by close Obama aide and confidante Valerie Jarrett of the discussion while they were heading to the service.

The president told Jarrett and his wife, “When I get to the second part of referring to “Amazing Grace,” I think I might sing.” Jarrett said she just responded, “Hmm,” but Mrs. Obama said, “Why on earth would that fit in?” The president said he just wanted to warn them, saying, “We’ll see how it feels at the time.”
