Straight Outta Compton

I was privileged enough to checked out the special premiere of the highly anticipated NWA biopic, “Straight Outta Compton” last week before it opened this past Friday. I have to be honest, having grown up  in that era of now classic Hip-Hop and Gangsta rap, I was excited about this film’s release. Without giving too much away, let me give kudos to director F. Gary Gray (Set It Off, The Italian Job, Friday), who also starred in the movie as Greg Mack. The involvement of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Tomicka Wright, widow of Eric “Eazy E” Wright helped to keep the story authentic to what really happened with the legendary rap group. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll gasp and sing along to classic hits like Gangsta Gangsta, Express Yourself and yes, even F The Police. Watch it and find out the real reason they recorded that song. One of the highlights of the movie in my opinion is Ice Cube’s real son, O’Shea Jackson, Jr.’s portrayal of his dad. He did an incredible job and he looks and sounds so much like Ice Cube, you almost forget it’s not Cube!

Straight Outta Compton was the number one movie last weekend taking in $60 million at the box office.
