Blackish creator Kenya Barris talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about the success of the second season of the hit show, going up against Empire and why he says Blackish doesn’t follow television trends.

Does DVRing the show count as ratings?

“As long as you watch it in the first three days we get credit. Our DVR numbers are great. We went up 51% this week and last,” Barris said.

What he wants for the second season:

“My goal this year was to get more of our people to tune in. Our show doesn’t have a huge number of African American’s for the live viewing.”

On the trend of gay characters on television:

“We don’t follow trends or do things for sensationalism.”
