Diana Ross is a national treasure. And in 2016, she will grace us with her presence on the 2016 Fantastic Voyage, with a special performance for her longtime fans. If you’re a little younger and think of of Ms. Ross as Evan Ross (ATL) and Tracee Ellis Ross‘ mother, then you may have missed out on the fact that for all intents and purposes she is the woman whose career Beyoncé has modeled hers after.
In the 60’s, as part of the trailblazing Supremes, Ross scored hits like “Come See About Me,” “You Can’t Hurry Love” ‘Baby Love” “Stop! In The Name of Love” and other classic of the Motown era.
In the 70’s, Ross went on to solo success with songs like “I’m Coming Out,” “Muscles” and “Endless Love” and acting in movies, earning an Oscar nod for the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues and the eternal love of Black folks for the romance Mahogany all the while becoming a glamorous icon of beauty and fashion.
In recent years, Ross has had a lower profile, enjoying being a grandmother to her newest grandchild, Jagger Snow Ross, the daughter of Evan and his wife Ashlee Simpson, though she still tours worldwide. Here’s a pic from her recent concert at The Venetian in Las Vegas, taken by Evan.
Here are five times when Ms. Ross showed the true definition of a diva.
When she sang in the rain in true diva style: Central Park concert 1983
When she had a close encounter with Li’l Kim (1999 MTV Video Music Awards)
When she starred in, and created her own wardrobe and outfits for Mahogany
That time she played Brandy’s superstar mother for the TV movie Double Platinum
That time she played Billie Holiday in Lady Sings The Blues and almost won an Oscar
