Newly elected Mayor of Mexico was shot and killed just one day after taking office. Gisela Mota, a former Federal Congresswoman was sworn into office on New Year’s Day and killed the following day. It has been reported that several gunmen opened fire on her at her home. Two assailants were allegedly killed and three were detained. It is suspected that the murder may be connected to organized crime. Drug cartels and gangs have been known to try to control communities and towns in Mexico and have often targeted local officials.

She is described by her Democratic Revolution Party as a strong and brave woman who upon taking the office of Mayor declared that her fight against crime would be frontal and direct. Click here to read more.
