The family of slain Black man Mario Woods is demanding a federal investigation focused on the police shooting incident that took place last December. The 26-year-old Woods death on Dec. 2 death has been called a wrongful shooting by the family, although the man was allegedly armed at the time of the incident.

NBC Bay Area reports:

The family of Mario Woods, who was shot and killed by San Francisco police officers last month, is urging the U.S. Department of Justice to examine whether there is pervasive racism in the policies and practices of the city’s police department.

Noted civil rights attorney John Burris, who is representing the family of 26-year-old Woods, held a news conference Monday morning to call for a federal investigation into the Dec. 2 shooting and an independent investigation into the city’s use of force procedures.

Burris filed a federal civil rights case against the department last month on behalf of Woods’ family and is now asking for two federal investigations. He wants an investigation into whether the five officers criminally violated Woods’ civil rights when they shot him and wants a broader investigation into whether there is a pattern and practice of discrimination in the department.

Mayor Ed Lee is calling for a review of the San Francisco police department’s policies regarding use of force. There have also been calls from the public to have SFPD Chief Greg Suhr resign from his position.

Several cellphone videos have come forth, which has ignited a series of protests and civil disturbances. Some observers have called the Woods death an execution.
