Whoopie Goldberg Peforms

The #OscarsSoWhite controversy continued on a recent episode of The View where actress Whoopi Goldberg made great points about the importance of diversity in TV and film, but managed to sound like a token at the same time.

How is that possible you ask? Read on!

“[The Oscars] can’t be racist I won once…and I’ve been black the whole time,” said Whoopi. In the 25 years since she won her golden statue in 1991 for Ghost, only 10 other African American actors have received the honor.

“The issue is not the Academy,” she said in reference to the organization’s membership that’s over 90% Caucasian. “Even if you fill the Academy with Black and Latino and Asian members, if there’s no one on the screen to vote for, you’re not going to get the outcome that you want.”

She went on to subtly take jabs at Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith and Al Sharpton who’ve called for African American artists to boycott this year’s Academy Awards. “You wanna boycott something? Don’t go see the movies that don’t have your representation,” said Whoopi “That’s the boycott you want. To me, we have this conversation every year. It pisses me off.”

Whoopi went on to share that long before a film even becomes a contender for an award, it’s up to the studios, casting directors and people green-lighting the film to ensure that the cast is diverse. “You need directors and producers who will say, ‘Hey, what about so and so? They need to be aware that the picture is not complete.”

Beauties, what do you think about Whoopi’s latest commentary?
