Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will host the Zika Virus Gold Coast 2016 prevention and reduction in transmission planning session for women and girls.

What: This discussion session will address specific concerns regarding environmental conditions that may be conducive to the breeding of Zika Virus carrying mosquitoes, such as household items (e.g. furniture, tires, appliances, grills) on the side of roads, in vacant lots, and yards. The discussion will, for example cover the topic of why household items such as buckets, cans, houseplants, grills are breeding sources for mosquitoes which should be secured so as not to become a means of spreading the Zika Virus. We will also discuss issues regarding the health and well-being of girls and women of child bearing age whose health, and reproductive status will be a primary focus of public outreach, education and services.

Who: Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee along with Dr. Peter Hotez, Dean of the National School Tropical medicine – Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Stephen Williams, Director for the Houston Health Department, Dr. Umair Shah – Executive Director Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services along with other Federal, State, and Local government agencies with responsibilities for responding to Zika Virus to discuss plans for Mosquito Season 2016, where they are implementing plans, and what they may need to meet objectives.
