A federal judge on Wednesday sentenced an Iowa man, who was convicted in March of a hate crime, to 10 years in prison for his brutal attack of a Black man.

Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta said in a statement that Randy Metcalf’s assault “threatened the most basic standard of human decency and dignity.”

On January 12, 2015, Metcalf got into an argument with the victim’s female friends over a jukebox at bar in Dubuque, Iowa. The prosecutor said Metcalf hurled racial slurs at Lamarr Sandridge and the two women throughout the night.

Later that evening, Metcalf, 40, attacked one of the women at the bar. When Sandridge tried to protect her, Metcalf’s friends beat the Black man until he was barely conscious. Metcalf then began kicking the victim in the head.

According to the Washington Post, Sandridge survived the assault but suffered numerous head injuries, which included a broken orbital bone. His female friend sustained a fractured cheekbone.

Gupta, who heads the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, added: “While no sentence, including this one, can undo the harm inflicted, it does send an unequivocal message that the Justice Department will vigorously prosecute hate crimes.”

Metcalf is a proud White supremacist. Witnesses said during the trial that he announced in the bar that he hated Black people, revealed a large swastika tattoo on his abdomen, and boasted to the bar owner that he has taken part in cross-burnings.

No stranger to the justice system, Metcalf had eight previous assault convictions, The Post reported.

In addition to sentencing Metcalf to the statutory maximum 10-year sentence, Chief U.S. District Judge Linda Reade ordered him to pay $1,874.56 in restitution.
