Kidnapping Scam

Source: Telemundo / Telemundo

Police are warning about a new scam in which someone’s cellphone is called from an unfamiliar number and they’re asked, “Can you hear me?”

The goal of the scammer is to get the person to say “Yes,” which they record and then use to authorize credit card or bill charges. Scammers are also using other questions to get people to say the word “Yes,” including, “Are you the homeowner?” and “Do you pay the bills?”

Some tips to avoid the scam include not answering when you get calls from numbers you don’t recognize, not giving out personal information, not confirming your number over the phone, and not answering questions over the phone.

Police are advising people who do get a suspicious call to hang up immediately and call 911, and those who’ve already gotten a call like this should carefully monitor their credit activity.
