Episode six single-handedly went somewhere that very few television networks go. Aisha Hinds as Harriet Tubman is utterly spellbinding, authentic and just, damn good.
The opening scene takes us straight into Harriet preparing for the day, tightening a corset that looks like armor, under a dress that looks like a military uniform. Set in an auction house, she makes a fervent plea to a group of white abolitionists to change their viewpoint and challenges them to take action against those who are determined to oppress others. Hinds’ one-hour monologue gives audiences an idea of who Harriet really was and provides details about her experience with slavery and how she ultimately escaped.
Before the episode aired, Hinds said this about her role.
“Playing Harriet Tubman is both a great honor and also a tremendous call to duty as we examine how familiar the pain of our past can be felt in the present. In sight of and in spite of the overwhelming obstacles stacked against her, Harriet transcended bondage and inspired generations in the pursuit of liberty.”
One of my favorite moments happened when Tubman sings the old negro spiritual Let My People Go. Her chilling rendition brings back memories of my growing up in a black church.
Hands down, this episode highlights Harriet’s ability to show just how gifted an orater she is by taking the audience through her tumultuous upbringing. She pushed the conversation into an outright performance that was equal parts honest and sad.
Take a look at Aisha’s unique sense of style from a few recent red carpet events.
