Disney dominated this weekend’s box office, earning the top two slots with the unstoppable Black Panther in its fourth weekend out and Ava Duvernay’s A Wrinkle in Time. It also marks the first time two black directors have occupied the two top slots at the box office at the same time.
Black Panther earned $41 million this weekend, pushing it to roughly $562 million overall. A Wrinkle in Time, which stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling, brought in $33.3 million, considered to be a slightly soft opener for the $100 million production.
- The Ryan Coogler-helmed Black Panther crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, becoming Walt Disney Studio’s 16th movie to do so and MCU’s 5th to earn that distinction.
- Disney is reportedly expecting upcoming spring breaks at colleges and K-12 schools to significantly boost the audience for A Wrinkle in Time. The stars and DuVernay have been revving their promotional engines as well.
- Strangers: Prey at Night took the No. 3 slot with $10.2 million.
