The senior class that has helped Houston Yates win 57 straight games and a state championship has one more game together to collect a second crown.

With senior guard Brandon Peters scoring 25 of his 29 points in the first half, the Lions roared to a 106-76 victory over Lewisville The Colony in a Class 4A semifinal Thursday night at the Erwin Center.

Peters, bound for Western Kentucky, put on a dazzling individual performance on the state’s biggest stage, slamming five dunks to show off a 44-inch vertical jump. He converted on 13 of his 19 shots from the field despite missing most of the second half with foul trouble and leg cramps.

“I was trying to get the game over with as quickly as possible,” said Peters, referring to his first-half performance. “I played my heart out.”

His teammates played at their customary frenetic pace from start to finish to wear down The Colony in the fourth quarter. Yates had its 15th straight game with more than 100 points, breaking the national record set by Hobbs, N.M., in the 1969-70 season.

Yates (33-0) will play Lancaster (36-2) in the 4A championship game at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Colony kept the game respectable with the help of fiery guard A.J. Price (23 points), guard Austin Chapman (19 points) and forward Jordan Williams (19 points).

“We always get every team’s `A’ game because of the name on our chests,” Yates guard Darius Gardner said. “We have a target on our backs.”

The Lions, whose entire starting lineup consists of seniors, have won 95 of their 99 games over the past three seasons. Yates also got a big performance from guard Elton Roy, with six three-point baskets on his way to 23 points.

Consecutive three-pointers by Joseph Young in the final minute kept the 100-point streak alive. Yates scored 34 points in the fourth quarter.

The Colony (30-9) trailed 51-36 at halftime but opened the second half with a 6-0 scoring spree to cut the deficit to single figures. The Cougars trailed 72-56 after three quarters .

Yates obviously missed Peters, who returned in the fourth and scored back-to-back buckets in 30 seconds to help Yates take an 81-59 lead with 6:18 to go.
