Police made an arrest in the shooting death of a 3-year-old girl. Alton Charles Barnes, 24, was taken into custody Tuesday evening and charged with killing Charissa Powell following an attempted carjacking.

The arrest came just hours after releasing a composite sketch of the suspect. Barnes’ younger brother also turned himself in with the help of community activist Quanell X. He was questioned and released by police and has not been charged in the crime.

Powell was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking Sunday. The girl’s father told police the suspect began shooting when the father tried to get his children out of the car. Powell’s 1-year-old brother was also hurt, but survived. Police believe the suspects were after the vehicle’s rims.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect jump into a waiting car following the shooting. Homicide investigators are looking for the brother’s cousin they believe he may have been involved in the shooting.

Meanwhile, Charissa’s family is making funeral arrangements.

Anyone with information on this case is urged to call Houston Police.
