NEW YORK (WPIX) – Consumers are being urged to toss a line of Slim-Fast ready-to drink meal replacements because they may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Unilever United States, Inc. in conjunction with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, issued the nationwide voluntary recall after discovering the canned drinks may be contaminated by Bacillus cereus. The recall encompasses the whole line of ready-to-drink canned shakes, regardless of flavor, Best-By date, lot code or UPC number.

The recall was put into effect after the company conducted quality testing on the canned products. Both the FDA and Unilever say there’s little chance a person can become seriously ill from consuming the drinks but are executing a recall as a precaution.

The recall does not affect other Slim-Fast goods, such as bars powdered shakes.

Consumers are urged to discard the canned shakes immediately and contact the company at 1-800-896-9479 for a full refund. The Consumer Services Center is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM ET. A recorded message is available 24/7.
