HOUSTON—There’s a growing debate about a new baby formula on the market that comes sweetened with chocolate or vanilla.

Kendell Barbles, mom to 17-month-old twins Reece and Reed, knows all about the new formula made by Enfamil.

Her twins were 6 weeks premature, and gaining weight has always been a concern.

When Barbles she first heard about the flavored formula, which targets picky eaters, she said she took notice.

“The scariest part of this product is it is geared to toddlers,” Barbles said.

Pediatricians like Dr. Ann Schroeder Lee seem to agree. Lee has advised parents to think before buying the sweetened formula.

“I think it’s concerning with the high sugar content for the formulas. I don’t think it’s a great idea, especially with all the obesity problems in the pediatric population, that we would start our toddlers on such sugary formulas and getting them used to that taste,” Lee said.

The latest statistics from the CDC reveal that 20 percent of children are either obese or at risk of becoming obese. Thus, it leaves critics wondering why the chocolate-flavored formula is on store shelves at all.

The maker of the product said the flavored formula is no sweeter than chocolate milk or orange juice, and even contains nutrients that milk lacks.
