I have always taken great pride in the fact that I made it on my own after college, moving away from friends and family back home in St. Louis to a city in which I knew only one person. Being physically alone without family is always a scary situation, but I haven’t turned back after 11 years, and I look forward to future decades of independence. But when I look back at all the years I spent questioning life and love, the one thing that stayed consistent in my life, no matter what was going on, was the presence of my girlfriends. Sure, I had to weed out the fair-weather friends over the years, but once I found that group of women that weren’t afraid to expose themselves to me, all of a sudden, family didn’t seem so far away.
