James Winkfield was a black thoroughbred jockey and horse trainer who was the last known African-American to ride a winner in the Kentucky Derby. The youngest child with 17 siblings, Winkfield’s chores including tending the farm and assisting in the downtown thoroughbred races. In 1898, he would ride his first race.
