Lakers center Andrew Bynum was suspended by

The NBA has suspended Lakers center Andrew Bynum for the first five games next season and fined him $25,000 for his flagrant foul on Dallas guard J.J. Barea on Sunday.

Tuesday Bynum apologized, saying it didn’t reflect his upbringing or the Lakers’ organization.

The foul was widely criticized as an embarrassment to the Lakers and Phil Jackson, who was coaching his last game with the team.

“I want to apologize for my actions at the start of the fourth quarter in Dallas,” Bynum stated. “This doesn’t represent my upbringing and I want to apologize to J.J. Barea for doing that. I’m glad he wasn’t seriously injured. All I can say is I look at it as terrible.”

The elbow move took place en route to the Lakers’ 36-point loss in Game 4 of their second-round playoff series last Sunday. Barea landed hard on the ground, and Bynum took off his jersey while leaving the court.

Immediately after the incident, which drew an immediate ejection, he was not apologetic. Looking at replays changed his mind.
