Residents in the Houston area seem to be seeing an inordinate amount of mosquitoes lately. At Memorial Park on Sunday, the story wasn’t any different. Samuel Smith was selling his artistic greeting cards, but he couldn’t get a group of mosquitoes to go away.

“They won’t let me sit down or anything. I have to move around every now and then because they gang up on me. They’ll be all around my legs,” Smith said.

The Carrette family and 2-month-old Camilla couldn’t shake the problem either. “It was like a cloud of mosquitoes around the stroller so we had to run,” said Camilla’s mother, Silvia Carrette. Despite how bad it may seem, some experts said the area is not seeing more mosquitoes than usual. Sandy Kachur from the Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services said the bites are coming from ‘flood water mosquitoes.’ Kachur said although they’re pests, they aren’t diseased. Her recommendation is to use repellant, especially for younger kids.
