Tennessee legend Pat Summitt can add another honor to her long list of accomplishments and accolades.

On  the day the University of Tennessee will formally announce that she is stepping down as the Lady Vols head basketball coach, President Barack Obama announced that Summitt is the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Obama called her “an inspiration” for her successful record and her candor to “speak so openly and courageously about her battle with Alzheimer’s.”

In a press conference Thursday, Summitt said about the award, “I didn’t see it coming.  It’s a tremendous honor.” The Award will be given out to her and others selected to receive it later this year.
