(HOUSTON) — A Baytown family is suing a San Antonio university for the wrongful death of their son.

A University of the Incarnate Word campus officer shot Cameron Redus five times at close range on December 6.

Cpl. Christopher Carter claimed he was forced to shoot the 23-year-old after a six-minute struggle in the parking lot of Redus’ apartment.

Speaking to KENS 5 in San Antonio, Valerie Redus said they were forced to file suit.

Redus’ parents acknowledge that the school has done some nice things in their son’s memory, and they admit that he was resisting arrest. But they said their son would be alive if the university had properly trained and supervised Carter.

The university responded to the lawsuit:

While the University does not seek any conflict with the Redus family, we welcome the opportunity that the lawsuit will provide to defend the efforts we make to educate and protect our students. We are still reviewing the details of the lawsuit, but our initial review supports our belief that a court of law is the appropriate venue for experts to testify about the events that ended in the death of Cameron Redus.
