(GALVESTON, TX) — Galveston police say a woman who drove her car into a bayou was trying to kill her infant son, who was in the car with her.
Galveston Police Department Chief Henry Porretto says LaToya Kirven was nude and intoxicated around 5 p.m. Sunday when she crashed into a home. A 71-year-old man came outside of the home, and Porretto allegedly ran over him and then fled the scene.
That victim is the father of Kirven’s 14-year-old child, police tell us. AT last check, he was in critical condition.
Shortly after, police said she drove her car into Offats Bayou with her 6-month-old son in the car.

Several people were there to rescue both Kirven and the child. We’re told the baby is OK.
Kirven was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle.
After reviewing videos, evidence and witness statements, police also charged Kirven with attempted capital murder. They believe she was trying to drown her baby after driving her vehicle into Offats Bayou.
Bond for the attempted capital murder charge was set at $250,000, bringing her total bond amount for all three charges to $410,000.
Police said they still don’t have a motive and are waiting on lab results from a blood draw. They are unsure whether she had any other drugs in her system.
