One of Nigeria’s most reputable fertility clinics, the NORDICA Fertility Centre, has announced that more than 5 million of Nigerian women are dealing with Endometriosis disease, a disease in which endometrium tissue abnormally grows outside of the uterus.

Between 30 and 40 percent of women dealing with Endometriosis also endure fertility issues due to related symptoms and health problems like abnormal bleeding, tuberculosis and epilepsy.

Dr Abayomi Ajayi, the managing director of NORDICA, says that although the disease doesn’t discriminate by race and that 178 million women are suffering from it internationally, too many Nigerian women suffer from the disease in silence because of ignorance about the medical condition.

“Unfortunately, many cases are yet to be diagnosed because a good number of women have come to accept painful menstruation as normal or they had visited a doctor who doesn’t know anything about endometriosis,” Ajayi explained.

Women suffering from endometriosis generally have abdominal and pelvic pain that can be irritated during sex and menstruation. The disease is diagnosed with physical examinations, ultra sounds and laparoscopies, the latter being a surgery that uses a tube to examine women’s abdominals for cysts, adhesions, fibroids and infections.

Endometriosis can’t be cured but it can be alleviated with hormonal drugs.

Ajayi says that NORDICA is now launching a sweeping campaign to address the disease in other institutions that can help spread knowledge and access to treatment for women in Nigeria.
