Twitter announced changes yesterday (May 24th) that will allow for longer messages without changing the 140-character limit per tweet. According to Mashable,

Starting in the next few months, photos, videos and other media won’t count toward the 140-character limit, and neither will text in replies that start with the “@” symbol and the user’s name. But weblinks and names with the “@” symbol in the middle of a tweet will still count towards the limit. In other changes, people will be able to retweet and quote their own tweets, and any new tweet beginning with an @name will be seen by all followers. As it is now, a tweet that starts with a person’s “handle” doesn’t become part of their feed.

Good stuff, Twitter!!
