Susan G. Komen Houston Reschedules 27th Annual Race for the Cure

Susan G. Komen® Houston has rescheduled its 27th annual Susan G. Komen Houston Race for the Cure® to January 27, 2018. While the nonprofit and the wider breast health services community faces the challenge of addressing the disaster recovery needs of breast cancer patients and their families, Komen Houston also remains focused on the bold goal of eradicating breast cancer forever.

Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Komen Houston takes this year’s Race for the Cure® theme of “Be More Than Pink” to heart as the organization encourages supporters to form a team and fundraise in an effort to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in the U.S. by 2026. Komen Houston is encouraging Houstonians to show their support for Susan G. Komen’s overall mission by wearing pink on October 6, 2017 and sharing their photos on social media with the hashtag, #IAmMoreThanPink.

While there is a 38 percent decrease in breast cancer mortality since 1989, in 2017, over 40,000 women in the U.S. will die from breast cancer. Local fundraising will help Komen Houston work towards the bold goal of cutting breast cancer deaths in half as 75 cents of every dollar raised goes into the Houston community to fund the screening, treatment and support of local breast cancer patients. The remaining 25 cents is given to fund cutting-edge research where it exists, both in Houston’s state- of-the-art Medical Center and in other centers across the country.

To date, Komen Houston has invested over $50 million to more than 65 local organizations to provide services throughout Houston to underinsured and uninsured men and women who receive life-saving breast cancer screenings, treatment, transportation, and other necessary supportive services. In 2017, Komen Houston is proud to call Baylor College of Medicine, D’Feet Breast Cancer, Inc., Spring Branch Community Health, Sisters Network Inc., Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation, The Rose, The University of Texas Medical Branch, and more, its 2017 grantees.

“While so much has been devastated, it has not dampened our fighting spirit,” Emelda Douglas, executive director of Komen Houston said. “I am humbled hearing the stories of our many breast cancer survivors and volunteers who have been affected by the recent floods. Our work is now more relevant than ever as we continue to help the community rebuild. With one out of every eight Houstonians diagnosed with breast cancer, race participation and fundraising is crucial to decrease the number of breast cancer casualties.”

Runners and walkers, alike, can sign up to participate in the Komen Houston Race for the Cure® by forming a new team, joining an existing team or by registering on their own. The January 27, 2018 Komen Houston Race for the Cure® route is a USATF 5K course with running and walking events, including a 5K timed competitive run, 5K timed non-competitive run and a 5K walk and family walk.
