Using a 2014 Olympic snub as motivation, Asian-American Mirar Nagasu decided to pull off a feat only two other women in Olympic history had managed to do. Nagasau landed the first triple axel by a U.S. woman in the Olympics, helping the United States team finish third in team competition.
“This is definitely history, or herstory, whatever way you want to put it,” she said following her performance.
The triple axel — a jump with three and a half rotations, and the only one with a forward-facing takeoff — is the rarest of feats in figure skating.
“Today has been the best day ever,” she said.
