Legendary Texas radio presenter, Lawrence “Funky Larry” Jones (aka “Uncle Funky”), has touched the lives of listeners globally for over fifty years. His career has spanned across various markets and eighteen radio stations in the United States, with over thirty years exclusively in Houston, Texas. Mr. Jones is currently the host of the top-rated Afternoon Ride with Uncle Funky Larry Jones & Ali Siddiq radio program on Urban One’s MAJIC 102.1 FM.

Over the years, the deeply smooth and welcoming voice of Funky Larry Jones has been of service to a variety of community organizations and high-profile events, including the Star of Hope, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), Lieutenant House, Houston Astros, City of Houston, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, Black Professional Cowboys & Cowgirls Association (BPCCA), Sheriffs’ Association of Texas, American Financing, Samsung Telecommunications, St. Jude Children Research Hospital and Community of Faith Church.

In addition to his radio broadcasting work in Houston, Mr. Jones’ voice has been heard nationally across various markets, including Chicago (WGCI-FM), New York City (WBLS-FM), and Washington, D.C. (WMMJ-FM). A recipient of Billboard Magazine’s “Personality of the Year” award, Mr. Jones was recently inducted into the 2022 Texas Radio Hall of Fame in recognition of his incredible commitment to the citizens of Texas for almost four decades.

Recently, Mr. Jones was recognized by several community leaders, including the city of Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner, the Honorable Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (U.S. 18th Congressional District), State of Texas Senator Borris Miles, NAACP Houston Chapter President Bishop James Dixon, and Houston Area Urban League President Judson Robinson.

A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Mr. Jones is a proud graduate of Alabama State University and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. While in attendance, he served as a drum major for the Mighty Marching Hornets band and played the french and baritone horns for the university’s symphonic band.

Mr. Jones currently resides in Houston, Texas with his beautiful wife of 21 years, Charlene, and is a loving and devoted father to his adult children (Sunnie, LJ, Brent, and Taylor), and grandfather to Sdynei, Malaya, Kamora and Aubrey (the official greeting voice of the Afternoon Ride with Uncle Funky Larry Jones & Ali Siddiq).

A graduate of Alabama State University, Larry also served as a Drum Major for the Mighty Marching Hornets Band and also played French and Baritone Horns for the University Symphonic Band.

The voice of Funky Larry Jones has been associated with the Star of Hope, Lieutenant House, Houston Astros, City of Houston, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, Sheriffs’ Association of Texas, Joe Myers Ford, Direct Energy, Xfinity Comcast, Specs, Honey Bake Hams, Boston Scientific, Community Of Faith and the Greater PureLight Church.

Larry’s voice can also be heard nationally in Detroit, St. Louis, Raleigh Durham and Columbus, Ohio, plus the Oprah Winfrey Network, St. Jude Children Research Hospital and the American Kidney Fund.

In 2021, he was awarded the Humanitarian Music Award for 2021 by Sugar Babee and was honored by SME as one of the Top 20 Influential Professionals & Entrepreneurs. He's also has received the Billboard Magazine Personality of the Year Award and is set to be inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.

Siddiq, a native Houstonian has appeared on Comedy Central, BET and more throughout his career.
