Juneteenth is a Texas holiday honoring African American heritage by commemorating the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865. The city of Houston Celebrates the African American Freedom Day with a variety of family fun events.

The Friends of Emacipation Park annual Juneteenth Festival is Today from 11a.m. – 8p.m. at the park and includes story-telling, entertainment and arts & crafts. Contact: 713-443-9774 or emancipationusa.com

The Houston Museum of African American Culture and Holocaust Museum Houston present A Walk to Remember at 6p.m. at the HMAAC, 4807 Caroline. Guests will begin by viewing the exhibition “PrintMatters.” At 7p.m. they will walk down Caroline Street to HMH to remember those who walked off plantations. Admission is free but seating is limited. Houston’s Institute for Culture presents Houston’s Juneteenth Celebration at 7p.m. at Miller Outdoor Theater. Special guest is local legend Joe Sample, a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders.
