Vogue Really Loves Blackface!

By Alyssa Manners

There’s been a lot of curious “darkening” going on inside the covers of Vogue recently. First, Italian Vogue it was the Rihanna (which was firece, but c’mon). Now, Jezebel Magazine has gotten their hands on some of the scans from French Vogue’s October Issue starring Dutch supermodel Lara Stone.   French Vogue is indulging in the darkening trend by making  Stone a little (or a lot) darker around the edges.

The October Issue of French Vogue, which was shot by Steven Klein and styled by editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld, is in honor of supermodels, yet none of the featured models are women of color.

Hey Klein and Roitfeld, why not use supermodels who are women of color?! What about Jourdan Dunn? She’s a supermodel! Or Chanel Iman? She’s a supermodel too!

Says Jezebel, “What Klein and Roitfeld should know is that painting white people black for the entertainment of other white people is offensive in ways that stand entirely apart from cultural context. France and Australia may not have the United States’ particular history of minstrel shows as a form of popular entertainment going back to the 19th century, but something about the act of portraying a white woman as black ought to sound an alarm, somewhere.”

WTF, Vogue? Are issue sales really so bad that you pull controversial stunts like this? Isn’t fashion universal? Since when are things like this acceptable?
