Is age just a number when it comes to relationships? Seth Meyers, Ph.D., psychologist and author of Overcome Repetition Syndrome and Find the Love You Deserve says, “While there are always exceptions to rules, a good rule to remember is that dating someone more than ten years older will present challenges now or later that add to the preexisting challenges any relationship has.” Relationship therapist Rachel Sussman adds, “You can see varied cultural references, disapproval from family and friends, and perhaps community disapproval, as well. It might be hard to relate to each other’s peer groups, too.” Still, Meyes and Sussman say it’s important to keep an open mind, adding that you should think of ten years difference as a general guideline, but be open to other ages as well.
